TPO Flat Roofing for Your Texas Business

Thermoplastic Polyolefin, or TPO roofing, is a single-ply membrane that has quickly become one of the most popular commercial roofing systems available. It consists of a single layer of synthetic material reinforced with a scrim, designed specifically for flat roof applications.

TPO membranes come in sheets typically 10, 12, or 20 feet wide, which are rolled up for delivery to commercial sites for installation.

This roofing material is widely accepted in the industry due to its naturally reflective surface, which helps reflect harmful UV rays. According to the National Roofing Contractors Association, TPO now covers about 40% of commercial roofs across the United States.

Benefits of TPO Roofing for a Flat Roof

Flat roofs on commercial buildings face a unique set of challenges. They are exposed to harsh weather conditions such as extreme temperatures, hail, and high winds—without the advantage of slopes to help direct water runoff. These surfaces must also withstand constant sun exposure, heavy foot traffic, and standing water.

Energy Efficiency

TPO is a highly energy-efficient roofing solution, widely used since the 1990s. It meets the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED v4 certification standards as well as the EPA’s Energy Star program requirements. With its reflective “cool roofing” colors,

Cost-Effectiveness

TPO flat roofing offers many of the advantages of PVC—such as heat-welded seams for added durability—while maintaining a price point closer to that of EPDM roofing. While both PVC and EPDM are rubber-based, TPO includes additional

Thick and Durable

TPO roofing is known for its exceptionally thick and durable top layer, making it a strong choice for flat roofs that experience frequent foot traffic. Its robust construction can help extend the lifespan of the roof and may reduce the frequency of maintenance over time.

Environmentally Friendly

TPO flat roofing typically lasts 15 to 20 years—comparable to, and sometimes outlasting, EPDM roofing. Because of this long lifespan, roof replacements are infrequent. And when replacement is eventually needed, TPO is recyclable, helping reduce the environmental impact

TPO Roofing Installation Our Preferred TPO Flat Roofing Products

After the existing substrate is prepared by cleaning or removing the existing roof, the insulation can be installed. There are a few types of insulation options the business owner may choose from:

  • Polyisocyanurate (Polyiso) – The most commonly used insulation type for Texas roofing applications, Polyiso is more expensive but pays off with a higher R-value rating.
  • Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) – With the highest R-value per dollar, EPS is used for roof, wall and floor insulation. EPS can be used for ground contact and does not retain water over time.
  •  Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) – Usually defined by the blue, green or pink color, XPS falls between Polyiso and EPS in the range of price and performance. XPS is semipermeable with a perm rating of 1.

The TPO membrane is attached to the cover board with a bonding adhesive or mechanically fastened. When the membrane is rolled out, our experienced contractors then can use a hot-air gun to hot air weld the seams together.
